A former financial director at a North Miami Beach private school was arrested for stealing $245,465, using some of these funds to gamble at a casino. Jennifer Tirado allegedly made 33 fraudulent transfers from Scheck Hillel Community School accounts starting in February 2020.

Staff at the school noticed money going to the wrong bank accounts despite the transactions carrying labels of legitimate vendors. Staff aired their concerns to Tirado, who was their supervisor. She allegedly was “very dismissive” and told them they had nothing to worry about.

After noticing that there were no corrections, staff members informed another school administrator who then reported the matter to police. This led to an investigation that uncovered the extent of the crimes. One of Tirado’s largest payments was $28,000 spent at the Coconut Creek Seminole Casino.

The school fired her in November 2021, with police only arresting her this week. She faces charges of first-degree grand theft and organized fraud. The school has since strengthened its financial controls to stop something similar from occurring again.
