A teacher in Virginia claims he unfairly missed out on a $214,500 payout because of an error by BetMGM. Kris Benton told local media that he might never bet on sports again because of the disappointment.
Benton placed over $3,000 in bets on the FIFA Women’s World Cup game between the Netherlands and Vietnam. The BetMGM app told him he won $214,500 thanks to his successful predictions, but he never received any money as the operator canceled the wagers as a result of an “obvious error with odds.”
was already discussing with his wife what they would do with the money
Benton initially thought he won the life-changing sum and attempted to withdraw some of the funds. He told WUSA9 that he was already discussing with his wife what they would do with the money.
An email from the BetMGM Online Gaming Operations Team apologized and explained that “There was an issue that caused the corners market to have inflated the odds,” which meant that the sportsbook operator did not know what the correct odds should have been and thus voided the bets and returned the stakes.
Benton isn’t happy with the explanation, stating that the operator made the mistake and can’t back up its claims with any evidence. BetMGM offered him a $100 free bet for the inconvenience.
